Every Saturday, I write about 5 events I would like to savor from the past week. ‘Savoring’ is the ability to be aware of the good things in life as they are happening and after it is over. It allows you to capture positive daily experiences and helps to create lasting memories. I want to share four key ways on how you can can savor on your own!
1. Look Ahead
If you have an upcoming event that you are excited about, chances are you are already in the process of savoring. When we anticipate a positive experience, we tend to think about all of the fun and exciting possibilities that lie ahead. This doesn’t need to be only saved for a vacation, but can be used for everyday experiences such as looking forward to enjoying a glass of wine after work, meeting up with a good friend on the weekend, or cracking open a book when you have a break in the day.
2. Become Aware of Your 5 Senses
Capture the moment by utilizing your 5 senses: sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. When you are in the middle of a pleasant moment, make it last by experiencing it through your senses. I love to use the 5,4,3,2,1 grounding skill where you notice 5 things you can see, 4 things you can feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. Try it out yourself!
3. Write About Your Experience
A great way to remember every detail about a positive experience is to write about it. Whether that is pen to paper, typing it up on your laptop, or recording it on voice memo; you will be able to look back at your event any way you choose. Writing is a wonderful way to express yourself and will help you identify the things that truly bring you joy.
4. Share With Others
Sharing your good news with friends and family can not only prolong your positive moment, it can also help to maintain positive relationships. People love to hear good news and they also like to share it. Know a friend who just got a promotion? Take them out to celebrate! Just aced your exam? Tell someone and bask in their praise! Don’t shy away from sharing your good news with the people you love!
Which of the four ways to savor the good in life will you try? Let me know in the comments. Also, check out my latest Savor Saturday where I share 5 things I want to look back on for the week!
